On Monday, a gunman killed one police officer and nine civilians in a mass shooting in Boulder, Colorado. The suspected gunman, 21-year-old Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, fired shots in the parking lot before he began shooting inside a grocery store at 3600 Table Mesa Drive around 2:30 p.m. No motive for this attack has been made public.
Officer Eric Talley, 51, was one of the first officers to respond to the shooting and was killed by the gunman. He had been with the Boulder Police Department since 2010. The names of the victims were released on Tuesday. It was reported that they ranged in age from 20 to 65.
Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold said, “”Regarding the suspect, at approximately 2:40 P.M. Monday, March 22, officers were dispatched to Kings Soopers. They arrived on the scene within minutes and immediately entered the store and engaged the suspect. There was an exchange of gunfire. The suspect was shot and a number of other officers were injured.”
Law enforcement from Boulder, Jefferson County, Erie, Longmont, and Denver all responded rapidly to the reports of an active shooter as well as other local and federal law enforcement. Eventually a man left the store and was arrested by police. Some witnesses report that the gunman was carrying a semiautomatic or AR-15-style rifle.
As of Tuesday, the suspect faces ten counts of murder in the first degree. He was reported to be shot in the leg. He will be transferred today to Boulder County Jail after being treated for his leg wounds. Along with an investigation from the Boulder County District, the FBI is also helping investigate at the request of the Boulder Police Department.
This event happened less than a week after a mass shooting in Atlanta where eight people were killed. Within the last week there have been at least seven shootings where at least four people were injured or killed in the United States.
